Credit Unions have been supporting their communities’ children’s hospitals since 1996. Credit Unions for Kids has raised more than $170 million for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. These vital funds go to help kids like Taylor and Rylin Stafford who were born at 32 weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital. Rylin’s umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck. Taylor weighed 4 pounds and Rylin weighed 2 pounds 5 ounces. Taylor’s lungs were immature. They both were on continuous positive airway pressure therapy, (CPAP) to deliver constant and steady air pressure. Both had feeding tubes and IVs. They needed to grow and work on feeding from a bottle. Rylin had problems during her feedings and would stop breathing during her bottle feeds. Taylor was in the NICU for 21 days. Rylin weighing only 3 pounds 6 ounces wanted to be home with her sister and miraculously was discharged from the NICU a week later as one of the tiniest babies ever to be sent home.
Mom, Jordan says, “Everyone was amazing. They made us feel welcome, and they listened to our concerns. They helped us to understand what was going on with our girls. It brought our family closer.” Jordan recalls looking in the rear view mirror as they were leaving the hospital with mixed emotions. She loved Children’s Hospital and everything they did for her twins, but she was glad to be going home! Every time she passes the hospital, she speaks to the babies out loud, so the girls can hear her. She says, “Hey, NICU babies.” It’s a tradition she wants to keep for her girls.
